The remains of Roknia are a group of megaliths located in Roknia, in the wilaya of Guelma, in the northeast of Algeria. This site contains more than 3,000 dolmens (by comparison, there are 4,500 in the entire territory of France), arranged along a length of about 2 km on the edge of a cliff.

The site was classified as a historical monument of Algeria on December 20, 1967. However, no archaeological excavation has been carried out since Algeria’s independence. A fence and an entrance were erected in the 1980s but have since been destroyed. Only a single guard is responsible for monitoring the entire site.

Description

The megaliths of Roknia consist mainly of dolmens, forming a prehistoric necropolis.

During the excavations by Jules René Bourguignat in 1868, bones, pottery, and jewelry were found there, in a form reminiscent of the megalithic culture of Atlantic Europe.

The artifacts found in Roknia are preserved at the Bardo Museum in Algiers and at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in France.
