The Archaeological Museum of Sétif or The National Public Museum of Sétif is a museum located in Sétif, in eastern Algeria. It showcases the past of the city and neighboring cities from the prehistoric period through the Numidian, Roman, Islamic, Ottoman, and colonial periods via artifacts discovered at archaeological sites in the region.

History

The idea of creating an archaeological museum to collect artifacts uncovered from excavations in Sétif and its surroundings dates back to the late 19th century, with the first stone museum established in the Duke of Orléans’ garden in 1896 (now Emir Abdelkader Park). This was followed by the Albertini High School in 1932 (now Mohamed Kerouani High School), and then the former Palace of Justice in 1968, which was the first museum opened after the country’s independence.

However, the continuation of excavation campaigns from 1977-1984 and the considerable wealth of ancient and Islamic collections highlighted the need for a museum that meets international standards, with a large and suitable space. In 1985, the Archaeological Museum of Sétif was established and was classified as a national museum by Executive Decree n 92-282 dated July 6, 1992, due to the significance of its museum collections.
