The National Maritime Public Museum of Algiers is a museum specializing in the study, research, preservation, and conservation of museum collections of the maritime heritage of the Algerian coastline. It boasts a rich collection that traces several centuries of Algerian maritime and naval history. It is located under the Kheïreddine Vaults, within the Algiers Admiralty.

History

It was established by Executive Decree No. 07-233 on July 30, 2007, and has branches in several coastal cities. The Museum strives to depict human life from its earliest interactions with the sea, with a focus on the Ottoman period of the Regency of Algiers that preceded the French colonization of Algeria.

It is situated at the foot of the Casbah of Algiers within the Kheïreddine Vaults, which were built in 1814 by Hadj Ali Dey and served as repair workshops for the fleet during the Regency of Algiers before the French colonial forces installed large ovens there to bake bread for their soldiers after the capture of Algiers in 1830.

Collections

Flag of Khayr ad-Din Barbarossa, governor of the Regency of Algiers (1518-1533), exhibited at the museum.

The museum houses tools used in the construction and repair of ships, navigation instruments, as well as marble steles, semaphores, and other objects discovered from the seabed, covering the prehistoric, ancient, medieval, and Ottoman periods.

There are also models of ships, paintings, sculptures, busts of legendary maritime figures, art objects, coins, and medals.
