The Skikda Town Hall, formerly known as Philippeville, houses an impressive collection of world-renowned artworks. This collection was mainly assembled during the terms of Mayor Paul Cuttoli between 1864 and 1949.

History of the Collection

Thanks to the efforts of Paul Cuttoli and his wife Marie, a great collector, the municipality was able to acquire many works from renowned artists such as Maurice Utrillo, Adam Styka, Charles Feola, J.F. Raffaelli, and Maurice Lévis. Between 1932 and 1946, the city purchased several paintings by these artists for amounts ranging from 6,000 to 25,000 French francs of the time.

The collection also includes works by local artists like Jules Chabassière, Paul Rossi, and Roland Irolla, who depicted the landscapes and architecture of the city. Some Aubusson tapestries, such as “La barque de Dante” and “Les femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement” after Eugène Delacroix, are also among the treasures of the Town Hall.

Unfortunately, part of this collection has disappeared or been relocated over the years, making an exhaustive inventory difficult. Nevertheless, the remaining works bear witness to the cultural richness of the city of Skikda.
