The Boghni hydroelectric power station is an electricity production facility located in the commune of Boghni, in Kabylie, Algeria. Commissioned in 1935, it is one of the first hydroelectric power stations built in Algeria.

History

The power station was constructed by the Société des forces motrices d’Algérie (SFMA). Work began in September 1932 and lasted 29 months. The plant was commissioned in January 1935.

On August 16, 1947, the power station was transferred to Électricité et Gaz d’Algérie (EGA) by decree.

On July 4, 2007, the power station was listed as a protected cultural asset by the Algerian Ministry of Culture.

Technical Characteristics

The power station is located at an altitude of 575 meters, 350 meters below Ain Tinzart. It is situated near the village of Ath Ali, about 12 km from the town of Boghni, on the northern slopes of the Djurdjura.

The facility includes:

  • A 1100-meter-long intake tunnel, 2 meters high, and 4 meters wide
  • A 1000-meter-long penstock with a diameter of 700 mm
  • Three turbo-alternator units

The initial power output of the plant was approximately 3 MW. The electricity produced is at 30,000 volts. The power station harnesses the waters of Ain Tinzert, a torrent that springs from beneath a limestone rock formation on the edges of the Djurdjura National Park.
