The Roman aqueduct of Constantine is an archaeological relic located in the center of the city of Constantine, Algeria. It is one of the few ancient sites still visible in the city.

History

The aqueduct dates back to Roman times when Constantine was known as Cirta. It was part of the water supply system of the ancient city. The monument primarily consists of a series of standing arches that once spanned a valley to transport water to the city. These arches constitute a symbol of Constantine, nicknamed the “city of bridges.”

Conservation

Despite its historical value, the aqueduct has suffered from the ravages of time and repeated acts of vandalism over the years. The site has also been threatened by inappropriate urban development projects.

In 2022, a controversial construction project was undertaken near the aqueduct, with the erection of a massive modern structure. Facing criticism for its negative visual impact on the ancient relic, local authorities eventually decided to demolish this structure and replace it with a project more respectful of the archaeological site.

Today, the Roman aqueduct of Constantine receives increased attention from authorities and heritage defenders to preserve this unique testimony of the ancient history of the city.
