Thagora (Thacora, Thagura) is the name of an ancient city in Algeria. A bishopric seat of Numidia, mentioned on the Tabula Peutingeriana and the Itinerarium Antoninum. It was fortified by Justinian. It is now called Taoura, located about twenty kilometers from Thagaste. There are ruins of Roman baths, a church, and the remains of a Byzantine fortress.

Twelve Roman citizens (martyrs according to Christian tradition) were executed there in 302, including Gratien, Julius, Felix, Crispin, and Potamia. We know more about three bishops of Thagora:

  • Xanthippe of Tagore (Kanthippus, Xanthippus Tagonensis) in 401, primate of Numidia from late 401 according to a letter from Saint Augustine (Epist. 59, 1-2). He participated in the council of Milev in 402.
  • Restitutus, present in 411 at the Carthage conference.
  • Timotheus, exiled by Huneric in 484.

Today, it is a titular diocese of the Catholic Church. Since 2018, the current bishop is Koenraad Vanhoutte (nl).
