The Touggourt Sultanate, founded in the 14th century in southeastern Algeria, established itself as a local power under the Beni Djellab dynasty, who ruled the Touggourt region. It retained its independence for centuries, despite attempts at annexation by neighboring powers, notably the Ottomans. In 1854, France annexed Touggourt, putting an end to its autonomy.
