The Merinid period refers to the rule of the Berber Zenet dynasty of the Marinids in the Maghreb, between the 13th and 15th centuries. Based mainly in Morocco, the Marinids took control of Fez in 1248. They overthrew the Almohads in 1269 by seizing Marrakech. Their empire extended as far as the Iberian Peninsula, and they actively supported the kingdom of Granada. However, military defeats and internal struggles led to their decline from the 14th century onwards, paving the way for other dynasties, such as the Saadians.
