Dar El Hadith is a madrassa, a Muslim religious school, located in Tlemcen, Algeria. A true “school of Algerian nationalism,” this institution is a symbol of the Algerian reformist Islamic movement. Led at its construction by cheikh Mohamed Bachir El Ibrahimi of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama, the school played an important role in the Algerian War of Independence.

Construction

An initiative led by cheikh Mohamed Bachir El Ibrahimi, the creation of Dar El Hadith arose from the need to provide the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama with an intellectual center.

The construction of the madrassa was entrusted to the famous Algerian architect Abderrahmane Bouchama, who also studied there.

Inauguration

The madrassa was inaugurated on by cheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis, then president of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama. The school was directed by cheikh Mohamed Bachir El Ibrahimi.

Due to its anti-colonial commitment, its attachment to Muslim identity, and the large number of martyrs who were trained there, Dar El Hadith is considered a “true school of Algerian nationalism during the colonial period.”

On , during the War of Independence, Senegalese riflemen requisitioned and occupied the school.
